Castle Rising in Norfolk is a Norman castle with impressive earthworks and a huge stone keep. Built in the 12th century by the d'Albini family, it is still owned by the Howard family, who are descendants of the original owner.

Norman Lord William de Warren founded Castle Acre Castle in around 1071. The town that grew up around the castle was extended by his son, who also founded the nearby Castle Acre Priory. Both the castle & priory have substantial remains and are conveniently close so as to make it easy to visit both on the same trip.

Oxburgh Hall is a beautiful example of a late medieval fortified manor house. The builder of the hall Sir Edmund Bedingfield was given a licence to crenellate in 1482. This was the date of the construction of the gatehouse, still surviving today as one of the oldest parts of the building.
