Built of red stone, Powis castle was once a welsh stronghold, built by Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn, Lord of Powis. He rather unusually built the original timber motte & bailey castle as a stronghold against the Princes of Gwynedd who he was in conflict with, rather than the Anglo- Norman invaders. So much for solidarity against a common enemy! In fact the Lord Gwenwynwyn was rewarded by the English and was granted the title of Baron de la Pole, from which the name Welshpool derives.

Brecon is a pretty town in Powys, Wales. Named after an ancient ruler called Brychan (whose daughter Tudful was martyred nearby, hence the town of Merthyr Tydfil in her memory) it was built on a roman crossroads, so was an important point on the route across Wales. However, the town actually built up around the castle, which is Norman in origin.

Crickhowell is a small Welsh town set in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The castle here was once an important stronghold, but today there is very little left to see. However, it makes a pleasant journey break if you are in the area, and can easily be combined with a trip to Tretower Castle & Court,  just a ten minute drive away.
