St Catherine's Fort is a Victorian fort, situated on St Catherine's Island, which is accessible from Tenby's Castle Beach during low tide. When we last visited Tenby in 2010 it had no form of public access. In 2016 a group of volunteers took over the fort and began opening to the public on a limited timetable, dependent on the tide times. In 2019 we made a return visit to Tenby and a trip to the fort was top of our itinerary.

Llawhaden Castle was technically a Bishop's residence, belonging as it did to the Bishops of St. Davids. However, after the original wooden structure was razed to the ground in 1193 by the Welsh under Lord Rhys, it was re-built in stone as a fortified castle with a large curtain wall. This was needed as the area was still volatile and not yet fully under Norman control. Therefore it always fulfilled the role of castle rather than palace and so has always been known as such.

The Bishop's Palace at Lamphey was one of the residences of the Bishop of St David's. (See also Llawhaden Castle and St David's Bishop Palace ) Unlike Llawhaden which was a defensive castle, the palace was intended mainly for relaxation when the Bishop was in residence- the beauty of the buildings being one of the most distinctive things about Lamphey.
