Although this is the third largest complex of prehistoric standing stones in England, the three circles and three-stone ‘cove’ of Stanton Drew in Somerset are surprisingly little known. The Great Circle, 113 metres in diameter, is one of the largest stone circles in the country and has 26 surviving upright stones. Yet recent surveys have revealed that the circles and cove were just part of a much more elaborate and important ritual site than had previously been imagined.

Stanton Drew Stone Circle and Cove Guided Tours
To help celebrate Heritage Open Days, on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September our team of English Heritage volunteers will be leading guided tours of Stanton Drew Circles and Cove.
There are 3 circles to explore, of which the Great Circle is second only to Avebury in size. Recent surveys have revealed that the circles and cove were part of a much more elaborate and important ritual site than had previously been imagined.

Please park at Stanton Drew Village Hall, Sandy Lane BS39 4EL, and arrive 10 minutes before your tour starts. Your guide will meet you there.
Before You Go
Prices and Opening Times: A £1 entrance fee is charged by the landowner for the Stone Circles and access is at his discretion.
Parking: There is limited free parking at the entrance to the stones field. Further free parking for the cove can be found adjacent to The Druids Arms.
How to Find it: Follow BS39 4EW for the circles and BS39 4EJ for the cove.
School Visits/Large Groups: The village has narrow roads that may not be suitable for large coaches.
Dogs: Farm livestock is likely to be present in the stone circle field therefore no dogs are allowed.
Please be aware: English Heritage does not permit drone flying from or over sites in our care, except by contractors or partners undertaking flights for a specific purpose, who satisfy stringent CAA criteria, have the correct insurances and permissions, and are operating under controlled conditions.

A visit to the nearby Neolithic Tomb of Stoney Littleton Long Barrow also gives you another opportunity to explore the surrounding countryside.
